Castillo seeks to educate, not manipulate, in his work
Rosibel Pacheco
Honduras This Week
Ever since Roberto Castillo submitted his first short story to a university literature contest two decades ago, this year’s recipient of the National Prize for Literature has been causing a stir among national literary circles, with provocative works such as The Bugler, which focuses on militarism in Honduras, and The Lagoon, which deals with poverty. The incalculable cost of forest fires
Honduras This Week
87 percent of the surface area of Honduras is covered by forest, the highest in Central America. Forests in Honduras face constant threats from the agricultural industry as trees are leveled to make room for cropland. In the past 40 years, 46 percent of the country’s forest land has been lost, most of that of the broad-leafed variety of trees, which does not include pine. Full Article

Doña Albita:
A saint alive and well in Copán Ruinas
Marco Caceres
projecthonduras.com
I don’t much believe in heroes and saints. I find the concepts strange and not particularly useful. Plus, all too often I find the examples that we are given to be, well… disappointing. I much prefer mentors and role models. You know, people you can really look up to and want to emulate because you sense something special in them that you can conceivably see and hopefully draw from within yourself. Full Article
Real thoughts from Honduran high school students on present-day issues
We received a collection of letters written by 10th grade students in Esther Bettney’s English class at Siguatepeque Bilingual Christian School. Ms. Bettney’s class uses “Honduras This Week” in her classroom as a teaching tool for learning English. Their letters were written in English and they highlight issues in Honduras about which they feel very strongly. They have been minimally edited, and then only to clarify the writer’s meaning. Each one of them is thought-provoking and important. Letters to the Editor

KELCY WON (again): RECO UPDATE:
We just missed the deadline last week and could not report that Mr. Kelcy Warren of Barbarretta won the coveted RECO award. The big voting meeting that was postponed because of the lack of a proper forum was held the next day and by a close margin, Mr. Warren’s company won. Now we are waiting to see if this fits President Zeleya’s master plan. The last time Mr. Warren won the popular vote, it was nixed by central government due to a commitment the congress made to the Dominican Republic bidders. The Dominicans have now threatened to sue the country for lost profits, thereby scaring Honduras into a last minute attempt to move the award back to them. What a tangled grid we weave.

Guanaja: The Bay Islands’ well-kept secret a Caribbean gem waiting to be discovered

Guanaja, Bay Islands, Honduras
Goldilocks had three beds to choose from when she came upon the Three Bears’ den. What did she end up picking in the end? That I can’t remember exactly which bear bed she picked is immaterial; Goldi ended up picking that one that was ‘just right.’ If we were to compare the three main islands of Honduras’ Bay Islands to the bears’ beds, which one would be ‘just right’ for the average tourist? Nacaome: Off the beaten track as tourist destination
Honduras Institute of Tourism

Photo: www.google.com
The church in Nacaome faces the Central Park, a traditional earmark of colonial Honduran towns.
Nacaome was founded on the basis of a peace pact between two tribes, the Cholulas and the Chaparrastiques, who grew tired of fighting, long before the arrival of the Spanish, and built new houses together. This foundation occurred in the year 148 A.D. and the word Nacaome means ´two races’ as the population was made up of the two tribes. At first situated on the edge of the Nacaome River, this site proved impractical and the tribes moved the town to its present site. In 1535 the Spanish arrived and built the first church and organized a town government. In 1579 when Honduras divided into the two provinces of Comayagua and Tegucigalpa, Nacaome became part of the Tegucigalpa province. Full Article

The exhibition “Road at Light” in the Paraninfo room of the National Art Gallery (NAG) is the work of artist Miguel Angel Matute. The NAG will continue the exhibition through March, especially for Easter Week due to the religious content of the artwork. Altogether, this exhibit makes a positive contribution toward the recovery of the national identity. Full Article
