Exclusive HTW Interview:
International prize-winning writer Lety Elvir speaks
Alejandra F. Bermudez
Special to Honduras This Week

Photo: courtesy of Claudia Sosa Elvir
Writer Lety Elvir is internationally renowned.
HTW: You are an international prizewinner, tell us about your awards. Lety: I was awarded the first International Prize 1997, from the VIII International Biennial exhibition of poetry promoted by the magazine “Correo de la Poesia” (Mail of Poetry) Valpariso, Chile. I also achieved first place in the International Contest of tales, called by the National University of Costa Rica, 2002. Before 1996 I received the first prize Embassy of Chile. Due to this coincidence of receiving two awards related to Chile and the close link that in that time existed between artists and the Embassy I was awarded with one more prize: The Embassy of Chile in our country was put in charge of the representation of my first collection of poems, LUNA QUE NO CESA, (MOON THAT DOES NOT CEASE), which became the most sold book in 1998, according to the media and Guaymuras Library. Rural schoolchildren receive lunch.
Several weeks ago, our school year began across the nation. Classes will continue into November. Therefore each weekday morning after milking, my oldest boy will hurry down the mountain to catch the suburban bus to his school in the town of Siguatepeque, twelve miles away. My other two children, a first and a sixth grader, will stay at home. Full Article

Colombia discovers its own “New World”
The Patriotic Union (PU) was a proposal of the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) back in 1985, during the Belisario Betancourt administration, as a peaceful solution to the social conflict that plagued Colombia for several decades. It was going to be a political party of force that would unify several leftist organizations, including ex-militants of FARC and members of the Communist Party of Colombia (CPC). Little by little, some ex-militias of FARC were leaving the armed conflict to become part of this new political party. Full Article

Hugo Chavez and Alvaro Uribe, presidents of Venezuela and Colombia confer in more peaceful times.
A Colombian precision-bombing strike destroyed a FARC permanent terrorist base in the Ecuadorian region of Sucumbia, killing the narco outfit’s second in command, known by the infamous alias ‘Raul Reyes’; the bombardment was followed by daring commando and police raids that swept the demolished military camp for insurgent survivors and valuable intelligence, one heroic Colombian soldier was killed in the line of duty. In response to the Colombian incursion into Ecuadorian territory, President Rafael Correa dispatched 11, 000 soldiers to his country’s border with Colombia. Venezuelan premier Hugo Chavez went sent a bold message through his nation’s airways, “Mr. Defense Minister, move 10 battalions to the border with Colombia for me, immediately!”. Full Article

Vacationers soak up sun and sea in West Bay, Roatan
(Editor’s note: A version of this article appeared in the February 23rd edition. It has been edited to reflect the different time-frame and is reprinted to enhance the tourism focus of this week’s edition.)
Honduran Minister of Tourism, Ricardo Martinez, recently announced the initiation of a new operation in anticipation of some two million travelers, both foreign and domestic, who will visit various tourism “hot spots” during Easter Week (March 16th - 23rd), better known to Latin Americans as “Semana Santa.” The big draw: Caribbean and Pacific coast beach destinations.Full Article

Trujillo Beach winds its way along the Honduran north coast.

Located in the western highlands of Honduras, ancient Copan was one of the greatest Maya cities. Long known for its intricate stelae and exquisitely sculpted rock art, ancient Copan’s quality of art on its steles and buildings has made it one of the most studied sites in the Maya world. Present day Copan is a UNESCO World heritage site and is visited annually by over 160,000 people. Full Article

YOU CANNOT FIX DUMB
Went to Miami on a shopping trip. While checking out at Wal-Mart, we put one of those hard rubber divider bars behind the lady in front of us to separate her order from ours. The young checker picked up the bar and tried to scan it for a price. When it did not work, she asked if I knew how much it was. I told her I just changed my mind, I won’t take that today and she seemed relieved. By Don Pearly

Archive/Honduras This Week
The church in Pespire, in southern Honduras, rises above cobblestoned streets and terracotta tiled roofs. Small, quiet colonial villages like this throughout the country are finally being discovered.
For the past 20 years, Guatemala and Costa Rica have figured out how to exploit their virtues to many of the world’s tourists. Both countries have their fair shares of natural beauty and alluring destinations to attract visitors. Finally, Honduras is making a concerted effort to catch up and these efforts are paying off. Ojojona: Destination of hidden traditions
Honduran Institute of Tourism
Special to Honduras this Week

Artisans in Ojojona create unique pottery, pedestaled bird baths and more.
Its pleasant climate, varied handicrafts, tasteful dishes and the kindness of its people are all part of the allure of Ojojona, a town that still prides itself in conserving and celebrating colonial architecture. Another advantage: this colorful little village is only 32 kilometers south of Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras. This makes Ojojona an easy day-trip from Tegucigalpa: wake up, grab some breakfast and head to Ojojona for the day. During your trip, you have the option to make some stops, like at Doña Gilma’s place. Gilma is well-known for her culinary skills and her capacity to improvise her cooking. Enjoy her just-made maize tortillas and fresh cuajada (a kind of fresh, light cheese) of the day, roasted meats, garlic sausage and other delights sure to please both big and small. In addition, Ojojona has an endless number of restaurant and hotel options. Full Article
Coral Negro Tours Offer an Authentic Garifuna Experience
Jennifer Godbold
Honduras This Week
(Editor’s note: The following article appeared in the July 28, 2007 edition of HTW. It is reprinted here for the benefit of our readers who will soon be taking advantage of Easter Week travel.)
The idea for Coral Negro Tours began in 2001 when Julian Solis, a Garifunan born in Le Ceiba, realized the tourism potential of the Garifunan community of Nueva Armenia located near Le Ceiba. Due to the increasing interest in Honduran tourism over the last few years, Julian Solis felt the garifuna communities could actively participate in the Honduran tourism sector. Mr. Solis, along with the help of his brother Rony Solis, knew their developing project at Neuva Armenia would require a significant amount of preparation to be successful. Full Article |
