Ojojona: Destination of hidden traditions

Special to Honduras This Week

A tree-lined street greets all who enter the pastoral, colonial village of Ojojona.
Its pleasant climate, varied handicrafts, tasteful dishes and the kindness of its people are all part of the allure of Ojojona, a town that still prides itself in conserving and celebrating colonial architecture. Another advantage: this colorful little village is only 32 kilometers south of Tegucigalpa, the capital city of Honduras. This makes Ojojona an easy day-trip from Tegucigalpa: wake up, grab some breakfast and head to Ojojona for the day. During your trip, you have the option to make some stops, like at Doña Gilma’s place. Gilma is well-known for her culinary skills and her capacity to improvise her cooking. Enjoy her just-made maize tortillas and fresh cuajada (a kind of fresh, light cheese) of the day, roasted meats, garlic sausage and other delights sure to please both big and small. In addition, Ojojona has an endless number of restaurant and hotel options.Full Article
Movie Review:
“No Country for Old Men” - Did it deserve the Oscar?
Todd Ellertson
Honduras This Week

When “The Departed” won last year’s Oscar for Best Picture, some thought it might have been a fluke that an overtly violent movie could garner filmdom’s top honor. This year’s winner, “No Country for Old Men,” may have proven that it was, in fact, not a fluke. Like “The Departed,” “No Country” is equally as violent, if not more so, but both have a compelling story underneath the violence that secure their places in film history and seemingly made them deserving of their Oscars.Full Article

A SUPER LASTING IMPRESSION
Having served in the United States Navy, this story is especially thrilling for me. It seems the U.S. Navy budgets a small amount of cash to be spent helping people in their ports of call. It isn’t much, but it can do a lot of good because backing it up is plenty of man and woman power. By Don Pearly

In the previous issue of HTW, I briefly outlined Copan’s’ three main tourism products; the quaint village, the archeological sites as well as museums, and finally Copan’s nature attractions. Each product is obviously distinct and requires its own special brand of marketing. As well each product requires that special care be taken in order to insure that each product area will grow and prosper in a sustainable manner. Full Article

In recent years, Copan Ruinas has been Honduras’s main tourist attraction, despite the fact many may consider its location inconvenient. The Honduras Institute of Tourism (IHT) was recently recognized in the United States with a silver ‘Adrian Award’ for its public relations campaign to reintroduce the country to the U.S. market (where awareness of Honduras as a travel destination has been historically very low). The immense success of the campaign is evident in the resulting media coverage, as well as in the increase in tourist arrivals and calls to the tourism office in Miami. The IHT was nominated on behalf of the efforts of their U.S. public relations agency, Ypartnership, headquartered in Orlando, Florida. The campaign was honored as a leader in the tourism industry with breakthrough strategies and practices.Full Article
