During Semana Santa the beaches around Tela Bay are used both day and night.

Honduras This Week National News1.8 million Hondurans and 60,000 foreigners. That is the number of tourists expected to travel to or within Honduras during Easter Week according to estimates from the Honduran Institute of Tourism (IHT). Last year’s numbers were 1.6 million and 56,000 respectively. The calculations are based on numbers from the Central Bank, the Institute of Statistics and household surveys, and the increase is attributed to the improving economy and lower interest rates. Honduras This Week National News“Scouting, also known as the Scout Movement, is a worldwide movement aiming to develop young people physically, mentally and spiritually, so that they may play constructive roles in society.” One hundred years ago Robert Baden-Powell came up with this, and now over 38 million people in 216 countries around the world are taking part. But what use can it have in Honduras? By Alex Jones

Tourism: Getting to know, enjoying
and discovering a country

Honduras This Week - Opinions and EditorialsThe church San Manuel de Colorete, located in the department of Lempira, is an architectural, religious and colonial jewel. Altar-pieces, paintings and ceremonial objects make this church a dignified place to visit. And that is just one example. The researcher Leticia Oyuela has written about the historic importance of these monuments scattered throughout the country. If you have an interest in religious art, Honduras has a lot to show you.Full Editorial

New charter flight between Rome and
Roatan in December

Anette Emanuelsson
Honduras This Week

Roatan
Archive/Honduras This Week
Many tourists arriving on Roatan come with the cruiseships but the government wants to attract more European flights.

Honduran Business and EconomicsItalian charter company Club Panorama will open a second flight between Italy and Roatan in December this year. The new flight was announced by the Honduran Minister of Tourism Ricardo Martinez at a press conference last Tuesday. Club Panorama already has a weekly flight between Milan and Roatan, which will now be followed by a direct flight from Rome. According to the minister, an average of 110 Italian tourists arrive in Roatan with Club Panorama every Saturday where they leave behind an estimated 700 euros each. Hopefully, one of the flights will also continue to San Pedro Sula and that way benefit the tourism industry on the mainland. By Anette Emanuelsson

A CHANCE MEETING

Travel & Tourism in HondurasWhilst waiting for an airplane, HTW ran into former president Ricardo Maduro. During our short time together, we were constantly interrupted by well wishers who instantly recognized their favorite president. Copan Update

Travel & Tourism in HondurasAs the cool nights and warm days of winter meld into the lazy, hazy days of spring, Honduras as well as the rest of Central America prepare for the biggest blow out bash of the year, Easter Week. Just imagine summer vacation, Memorial Day Weekend, Fourth of July, Spring Break, Christmas and your birthday, all tossed together like a big salad and that will give you some idea of what Semana Santa, or Holy Week has in store. Whilst the Catholic Church probably winces and wishes that the good church going folks of Central America would drop all the partying, beach carousing and drinking, much of the population decidedly looks the other way and concentrates less on the spiritual side of the week and more on the party, kick back and let loose aspect which has gained ground over much of the religious charm. Although many towns in Honduras still prepare solemn and colorful Easter processions and church services, the general feeling of the masses is that during Easter, anything goes, which is a shame as much of the customs and traditions associated with Easter Week in Central America are being slowly but surely diminished by the overwhelming, lowest common denominator: mass consumer culture.By Howard Rosenzweig

Review: ‘Apocalypto’ challenges Central American ancestral pride

Louise Wallace
Honduras This Week

Honduran CultureMel Gibson’s ‘Apocalypto’ will open in Honduras on the 6th of April in a pre-prepared mist of controversy. The film, which details the story of the last days of the Maya before the landing of the Spanish, has already divided audiences in Europe and the United States - complaints ranging from the inaccuracy of the portrayal of the pre Colombian civilization to the excessive, signature Gibson use of violence. Honduras is a country proud of its Mayan heritage. It remains to be seen how Honduran audiences will react.By Louise Wallace

Honduran CultureI would like to dedicate this article to the Volkswagen of Honduran watercraft: the dory. According to D.K. Evans, Bay Islands anthropologist and writer, a dory is carved from a single great tree, often mahogany or cedar. Sails are made of unbleached flour sacks, or whatever else comes in handy. Completing the necessary gear we have a hand carved paddle, a calabash for bailing, and a thwart or two for sitting. The size of the craft may vary, ranging between eight and thirty feet, and will, naturally, depend on the size of the original tree.By Jorge Agurcia Fasquelle
