Women of Honduras in fight for
representation

Louise Wallace
Honduras This Week

Honduras This Week National NewsIn 1955 the women of Honduras received the right to vote. Yet despite this concession, Honduran society has been slow to develop the representation of women in politics. 52 years on, The Center for Women’s Rights and the National Institute for the Woman have adopted the struggle against Honduran chauvinism.By Louise Wallace

Coffee plantations and inadequate sewage treatment threat to Lago Yojoa

Alex Jones
Honduras This Week

Honduras This Week National NewsIt is amazing what water can do. Lago Yojoa, the largest natural lake in Honduras, has created an area surrounded by amazing wildlife, great food, caves, waterfalls and cloud forest. But how long can this water last? Or, perhaps more specifically, how long can the lake, as a haven for all the life it caters, be sustained? This year the lake rose to higher than it ever has in the last fifteen years. Police Captain Miguel Martinez Madrid has his
own TV show called “Law and Order.”

Honduras This Week National NewsCaptain Miguel Martinez Madrid of the National Police of Honduras is a hard act to follow. He has two University degrees, one in Law and one in Police Science and Criminology, he is a trained pilot and is the youngest ever Commanding Officer of Public Affairs for Honduras. As well as his intellectual and career achievements, the inevitable danger of Captain Madrid’s job means that he has had many emotionally harrowing experiences too. As well as being shot at close range several times in his career, he has also had colleagues and friends die in his arms during police operations - something he will never quite be able to come to terms with. Beware the ides of
March

Honduras This Week - Opinions and EditorialsAccording to the Roman calendar, the 15th day of the Roman month of Martius represented the ides of March. The ides were lucky days that took place on the 15th day of March, May, July and October and on the 13th day of the other months. The date is famous because Julius Caesar was assassinated in Rome on the Ides of March, 44 BC at the hands of several senators. According to the Greek writer Plutarch, Julius Caesar had been warned of the danger but underestimated it. When Caesar arrived to the Senate on the day of his murder, he told a soothsayer with a smile on his face: “The ides of March have come” to which the soothsayer answered compassionately: “They are come, but they are not past.” Shakespeare in his work Julius Caesar from 1599, wrote the famous phrase “Beware the ides of March.” Full Editorial

Las Cuevas de Taulabé - a hidden tourist attraction

Las Cuevas de Taulabe
Alex Jones/Honduras This Week
The largest stalactite in Las Cuevas de Taulabé is six foot long and has the shape of a wing.

Travel & Tourism in HondurasAt the 140th kilometer, between Lago de Yojoa and Siguatepeque, Las Cuevas de Taulabé lie in the warm, orange rock. From the highway, they are inconspicuous - camouflaged by the mountain from which they are formed. Yet the modesty of the location betrays the magnificence of the caves which, though little visited, should certainly be considered a vital part of any tourist route. By Louise Wallace

BIG-TIME MEETING

Travel & Tourism in HondurasWell over a hundred ex-pats made their way to Coral Caye for a much-publicized Tri-Nation meeting. Councils from the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States joined forces to pay a visit to Roatan. They all have similar services and responsibilities and thought this would be a good idea.By Don Pearly

Copan Update

Travel & Tourism in HondurasAlthough this column is called Copan Update and I do reside in Copan Ruinas, I have been known to on occasion dip my toes in the warm, blue waters of the Honduran Caribbean coast and the Bay Islands. In spite of Copan Ruinas being the undisputed, hands down, no doubt about it, tourism capital of Honduras (just kidding), there is plenty going on these days on Honduras’ coast and Islands - lets take a look. By Howard Rosenzwieg

leeward

Honduran CultureMy mouth tasted like gasoline. I had just topped-off my cousin’s boat. But in the island there is no such thing as a dockside service station. So I had to haul ten gallons of go-juice from the pump, across the busy street, through the beach and finally onto the dock where the motorboat lay. And finally, as if this wasn’t enough to inconvenience a sailor, I had to suck on a plastic hose to get the transfer of gas started from the jerry can to the boat tank. By Jorge Agurcia Fasquelle
