Oscar Rossignoli has talent to spare
Carmen Guillén
Honduras This Week
Courtesy Oscar Rossignoli
“I guess you could say starting up the piano was a beautiful mistake,” Oscar says, laughing. “I originally wanted to play the drums, but they didn’t give drum lessons in my school, so I ended up taking piano lessons. I had no idea I’d end up enjoying it so much.” The violin and the guitar are just two more instruments Oscar’s repertoire, “but I love the piano best,” he smiles. “It makes me happy when I’m playing, I feel free.” Full Article

Young Garífunas celebrate at Sambo Creek
The small Ferris wheel is rusty, alarmingly creaky and must be operated by hand, but the children of Sambo Creek are blissfully unaware. Friday June 15th saw the start of Sambo´s annual two week long fair. Villagers get together each year to celebrate their Afro Caribbean roots with music, dance and traditional ceremonies. We were lucky enough to witness these festivities on Saturday evening. Full Article
Seized toothpaste containing toxic chemichal arrived from China
David Mannion
Honduras This Week
Additional information has emerged regarding tubes of toothpaste seized by the government in Tegucigalpa two weeks ago. The toothpaste arrived in Panama from China. The confiscation of 6,000 tubes of toothpaste in Honduran market places follows the seizure of more than 40,000 tubes of Chinese toothpaste in Nicaragua by government officials. Nicaraguan health minister Maritza Cuan believes more than 80,000 tubes could be remaining on shelves. Full Article
The Workforce: Who Wears the Trousers?
Claire Shropshall
Honduras This Week
Even though the Honduran workforce is widely perceived as being rife with inequality and poor trading standards, when it comes to the hiring and firing process employment laws are surprisingly strict. There is still a 40% pay difference between men and women in Honduras but the laws surrounding dismissal look favorably upon the employee and are particularly stringent. Full Article

Emergency Electricity: is it that necessary?
Since 1994, Honduras has had to buy more than 20 million Megawatts of electric energy, most of it thermal, at a cost of 30 billion lempiras. The energy crisis in Honduras began with the dependency on thermal energy, which generated huge economic windfalls for a select few families in this country. Full

The Free Zone is Not Quite a Free Zone For
All After All!
“The Free Zone will be for the people who live here with businesses pertaining to tourism.” This statement sums up who will benefit financially from living in the Free Zone. It has changed substantially from what was originally stated in the document that was agreed upon last November at Coral Cay. To find out more, I interviewed Governor Arlie Thompson at a recent Canaturh-Bay Islands meeting. By Bruce Starr

I Love This Job
Some assignments are better than others are. However, to take a tour of the Royal Caribbean Lines ship Rhapsody of the Seas ranks up there as one of the best. We have been aboard dozens of cruise ships and they are all first class with a capital “F,” this one is no exception. By Don Pearly
The Lost Women of Copan
Carmen Guillén
Honduras This Week
Sunlight rises lazily onto the Copan ruins, trickling into the crevices between Honduras’ famous Mayan depictions. Inside the Rosa Lila tunnel, which winds under the Acropolis, a tour guide addresses his group. “We think this room possibly belonged to the wife of a Mayan king,” he muses. Full Article
