Honduran Business and EconomicsThe 2006 Debt Sustainability Analysis for Honduras declared that “under the baseline scenario, Honduras’ external debt should be sustainable.” The document, prepared by members of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), assessed the sustainability of Honduras’ total public debt following debt relief received under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) Initiative and the Multilateral Debt Relief Initiative (MDRI). The paper claimed outlook on debt was “fairly robust… subject to moderate risk of debt distress.” Full Article

Honduras This Week National NewsRaul Valladares, private secretary of President Manuel Zelaya Rosales, announced Thursday, June 28, that the president himself ordered governmental agencies to investigate the recent assassination of his bodyguard and personal concierge, Alejandro Motiño Zavala. Hector Hernandez (Minister for the Secretary of Agriculture and Stockbreeding) claimed “transnattionals have threatened me,” in reference to international businesses that are unhappy with the country´s dealings with the maize, also known as a transgenic crop. Hernandez maintains that the introduction of GM maize into Honduras is legal and as of yet has not been prohibited. Full Article
